WACO, Texas (June 2, 2017) VIDEO: Senior engineering students in Baylor s School of Engineering and Computer Science worked for months to design and build a motorized chair to help 2-year-old Emmeline Pope, who battles spinal muscular atrophy. The motorized chair will provide Emmeline, who cannot walk on her own, with opportunities to move around and interact with others. Project manager Sean Martin, B.S. (Mechanical Engineering) 17, said his life was changed by the project. Through this entire project I’ve realized this is what I want to do with my life: product development, human-centered design, Martin said. Something that can really make a difference and I can look at my client’s face and see a before and after picture of what my work has done in their life.

A feature story on research conducted in the Arctic by Rebecca Sheesley, Ph.D. associate professor of environmental science in the College of Arts Sciences, and former environmental science doctoral student Tate Barrett. Their research consisted of analyzing black carbon, also known as soot, to detect the presence of radioactive carbon isotopes in order to tell whether the soot came from ancient carbon, such as fossil fuels, or newer sources, such as forest fires.
